St. Leo the Great School
Oakland, CA
What started out as a part-time job correcting papers while attending college turned into a different calling for Mr. Joe Leo. For the past 11 years, he has been at Assumption School creating papers instead of teaching Journalism as an enrichment class as well as computer classes. Mr.Leo teaches at both Assumption School and St. Leo the Great School.
Mr. Leo was editor of his high school newspaper and brought that interst with him into college as his major. He used these skills to start an after-school club for students in grades five through eight. In 1997-98, the school's first newspaper debuted and with the establishment of the club, the students took the helm of the yearbook. One year later, they prodcued a literary magazine, and the after-school club turned into an elective enrichment class.
Students participating in journalism have been recognized by the local professional media for their work in print and broadcast, received national recognition with their winning poem entries published in "A Celebration of Young Poets" and had the school newspaper featured in "Real World Publishing for Kids." For the past three years, students and editors have received national recognition via the USAA National Journalism Awards.
Mr. Leo prides himself on the fact that had he become a professional journalist, we would have been one among many, whereas in this role, many students have experienced journalism for themselves at a very young age, hopefully inspiring them to pursue future cateers in the field of journalism.
